A new treatment method for osteoarthritis is the treatment with so – called mesenchymal stem cells harvested form the body’s own adipose tissue. These cells can develop to become bone, cartilage, ligaments and tendons. During the procedure, the physician harvests mesenchymal stem cells, for example from the patient’s abdominal adipose tissue. Pure adipose tissue has around 500 to 1000 times more mesenchymal stem cells than bone marrow and contrary to bone marrow stem cells, is present in the body at a high concentration even at an advanced age. In addition, the adipose tissue contains specific cell populations that suppress inflammatory reactions and thus contribute additionally to regeneration.
Water jet assisted liposuction is an efficient method of liposuction. This gentle method of harvesting adipose tissue using a fine water jet provides for every high quality of the fat with the highest possible vitality of the adipose cells and a very large number of vital stem cells. The stem cells can be harvested from the adipose tissue already during the surgical procedure and are injected directly into the patients damaged joint. The endogenous stem cells appear to interrupt the inflammatory cascade so that patients have markedly less pain immediately after the treatment.
